Detecting Deception The Art Science of Uncovering Testifying to the Truth eBook Paul S McCormick
Detection Deception is a collection of knowledge and stories that few people, in ordinary walks of life, get to experience. From the beginning, this book will tease the reader along from page to page. McCormick brings us into the thought processes of a skilled interviewer working to discern truth from criminals that most people would prefer to believe do not exist. The author doesn't shy away from the unsavory aspects of his interviewees nor does he try to glamorize his job. There are no fluffy Hollywood tricks here, no fists on tables or slammed doors. His writing style is very easy to read and McCormick engaged me at every turn. I read the book in a single sitting. I'm not in Law Enforcement and never once did I feel "in over my head".
What I found most interesting about the book was that the lessons can apply to everyone, not just an interviewed subject. He asks us to look at ourselves and our own behaviors to learn more about others around us. I have found myself employing McCormick's methodology to sales people, clients, and my own teenager. It's fun to watch someone begin to "mirror" me as I have a conversation with them, as try I to find a truth. The usefulness and insight he provides for law enforcement easily transitions to life outside of his specific focus.

This book gives a foundation on what investigators should look for during interviews of not just bad guys, but also witnesses who are trying to sway the investigation a diferent way.
I've known and worked with Inv. McCormick for a number of years and value his insights and observations. Real-life cases and experiences add to the value of this work.
This is an excellent book for anyone looking to understand what to look for to discover when someone is lying. The photos coupled with excellent stories and examples provide a Master class in understanding this extremely common human behavior. I highly recommend this book to anyone who interacts with people who have the tendency to be less than truthful.
